How to become a Chartered Marketer

Want to take your marketing career to the next level? Becoming a CIM Chartered Marketer can do just that!

What are the key benefits of being a Chartered Marketer?

 - It’s an industry recognised status

 - It is a great way to make your CV stand out

 - It shows that you are up-to-date in the marketing world

So, how can you become a Chartered Marketer?

There are a few things that you must do before you can become a Chartered Marketer.

First, you must become a graded member of the CIM (that means you must be an Associate, Member or Fellow of the CIM).

What level you are will depend on how much experience you have in marketing – Associates (ACIM) have a CIM qualification or 3-4 years’ experience; Members (MCIM) should have between 5-10 years’ experience; and Fellows (FCIM) will have over 10 years’ experience in marketing.

It was only in 2020 that Chartered Marketer status was opened to ACIM members: prior to this only MCIM and FCIM could put themselves forward.

You must be a CIM member for over two years, and complete two consecutive years of Continual Professional Development (CPD). This means you have to register at least 35 ‘credits’ – which can be gathered from attending courses, going to events, reading industry blogs and more.

If you are a member with two back-to-back CPD years, you are able to sit the assessment to become a CIM Chartered Marketer.

The link for this assessment will be on your CPD page.

What is the Chartered Marketer Assessment like?

The Chartered Marketer assessment asks you to answer between 15 and 18 multiple choice questions around key areas.

You are asked to sit a general assessment and then choose four areas from the CIM professional marketing competencies to answer questions on.

Our top tip is to sit the CIM 'skills analysis' quiz first (located in the top right hand corner of the CPD page on desktop)- it's the same kind of, so it allows you to sit a sort of ‘practice test’ and also lets you see the areas you're best at. This means you can choose the areas you are most confident in, instead of choosing your areas randomly.

Take your time and think your answers through. However, if you don’t pass first time don’t worry, you can get several attempts!

What happens when I pass the Chartered Marketer Assessment?

You should celebrate!

When you pass, you’ll receive a certificate for you to be able to share, and you can request a Chartered Marketer logo to be able to add to your email signature, if you wish.

You will also be able to use “Chartered Marketer” or “CMktr” after your name – which you can add to your CV and on LinkedIn, and is a great way to stand out from the crowd and show your marketing success.

You will also be added to the Chartered Marketer Directory, so people can search the database and confirm you are chartered.

Remember that in order to STAY chartered, you must remain a member of the CIM and complete your CPD every year.
