Midlands Spotlight: Kirsty Hary, Assistant Social Media Manager at Boots UK
1. What made you want to be a marketer?
I fell into a work placement at uni doing social media for a local yoga company and fell in love with creating content! I’ve always been creative, I used to love making videos and being behind the camera when I was younger, so turning this passion into a career felt like a good fit for me.
2. What excites you most about marketing?
Personally in social media, trends excite me the most, especially when brands come together and create an engaging social moment for their customers! A great example of this was the Mark & Spencer ‘Mark + Spencer’ content with Mark Wright and Spencer Matthews. It was so simple, but within days brands had created their own versions and it was flooding my socials!
3. What has been your favourite project you've worked on/a highlight from your career in marketing?
I think so far in my career, working on Love Island as part of Boot’s partnership as the official beauty partner has been a real highlight. As a follower of the show for years, getting to work on beauty content for the partnership has been super exciting, rewarding, and at times has felt really surreal. I’m now in the middle of working on my 2nd season and I’m leading on all things social, which I am loving.
4. What would your advice be for fellow marketers?
Particularly in social, my advice would be to think outside the box with your content and take those risks! In the age of reduced attention spans whilst scrolling through social media, users don’t want to watch and engage in boring, repetitive content. Create content your audience doesn’t expect from you!
5. Over the next 2-3 years, what developments in marketing are you looking forward to the most?
I’m excited to see the further development of EGC (employee-generated content). I think brands such as Sisters and Seekers do this so well as they put a face behind the brand and it makes you feel as though you know the team and the brand inside out.
