How to use networking to help land your next role

In today’s competitive job market, the people you know can be one of your most valuable assets. Relationships play a central role in a successful job hunt, and networking can help uncover opportunities faster—often before they’re publicly advertised. According to Forbes, 85% of jobs are filled through networking rather than traditional applications, and LinkedIn reports that 70% of professionals landed their current role through a connection. Hiring managers frequently pre-select candidates from their networks, and digital platforms like LinkedIn and Reddit are increasingly used for informal outreach and informational interviews.

So how can you make networking work for you? Here are five practical strategies to help you build meaningful connections and open doors to your next opportunity.

1. Start with your existing network

Start by reconnecting with your existing network. Former colleagues, mentors, and even classmates can be valuable contacts - especially if they’re working in industries relevant to your career goals. Reach out authentically, not just to ask for help, but to offer value: share insights, make introductions, or offer support. These gestures build trust and reciprocity. If you're using LinkedIn, keep your profile up to date, engage with relevant content, and personalise your connection requests. Networking is most effective when it’s built on genuine relationships, so stay in touch and nurture those connections over time.

2. Let people know you are exploring new opportunities

Many roles are filled through word-of-mouth, so don’t hesitate to share your intentions with your network. You don’t need to ask for a job - just let them know you’re open to new challenges. Informational interviews are a great way to learn more about roles, companies, or industries. These conversations can provide valuable insights and often lead to unexpected opportunities.

3. Attend events and local meetups

Attending industry events and local meetups is another powerful way to expand your network. Whether it’s a trade show, a professional association event, or a local marketing meetup, these gatherings offer a chance to connect with people face-to-face. Organisations like the Chartered Institute of Marketing regularly host events that bring together professionals across sectors. When you meet someone, follow up with a quick thank-you message or a LinkedIn request to keep the connection alive.

4. Join professional associations or industry bodies

Joining professional associations, industry bodies, or committees can help you broaden your network beyond your immediate sector. Volunteering for a committee or supporting an event is a great way to build visibility and credibility. You’ll meet people with shared interests and gain access to new circles. Participating in forums, such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing Greater London Region LinkedIn community, can also be a great way to share insights, spark conversations, and connect with others in your field.

5. Build your personal brand

Finally, consider building your personal brand. Sharing your expertise through industry blogs, Medium, or Substack can help position you as a thought leader. Speaking at events, joining panel discussions, or contributing to webinars and podcasts are excellent ways to showcase your knowledge. You might also create a simple portfolio or website to highlight your work, interests, and achievements. A strong personal brand not only attracts opportunities - it helps people understand what you stand for and how you can contribute.

Whether you're actively job hunting or simply looking to grow professionally, investing time in networking can open doors you didn’t know existed. By building authentic relationships, staying visible in your industry, and sharing your expertise, you’re not just looking for your next role - you’re shaping your career trajectory. The connections you make today could be the key to tomorrow’s opportunities.
