The Art of Giving Back: Becoming a Trustee, use your marketing skills and make a difference!

By Sam Lee, CIM South East Regional Committee, Vice Chair - Education

In a world that often seems fast-paced and competitive, there is a growing recognition of the importance of giving back to our communities and making a positive impact on the lives of others. Over the coming months I am going to share with you, my thoughts on how you can start to “Give Back”. Whether you are at a stage where you want to have a career change or just want to add something to your week that expands your mind. Finding a way to help others, whilst achieving your goals can be so fulfilling.

This month I want to share my thoughts on becoming a trustee. I first became a trustee a few years ago following a 30-year career in marketing. I am now a trustee for four charities, all with their own purpose but collectively they all have a common goal – to help local people. I have found over this time that charities are desperate for experienced marketers to join their team. The smaller charities are short of marketing resource, so you can help them develop a stronger brand, build engaging communications and build awareness of the positive impact they have on their communities.

So, if you are starting to think about doing this, here are a few things to help you begin.

The Trustee's Role

Becoming a trustee is not just a commitment; it is an opportunity to actively shape the direction and impact of organisations dedicated to making a difference. Trustees play a pivotal role in various non-profit and charitable entities, providing strategic direction, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and upholding the organisation's mission.

As a trustee, you become a steward of positive change, helping to drive initiatives that address social challenges, promote education, support healthcare, and contribute to various other noble causes. This role allows you to leverage your marketing skills, experiences, and networks to make a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Personal Growth and Development

Beyond the philanthropic aspect, serving as a trustee offers incredible personal growth and development opportunities. It provides a chance to expand your leadership skills, enhance your decision-making abilities, and gain valuable experience in governance and organizational management. The challenges and responsibilities of being a trustee can push you outside of your comfort zone, fostering resilience and adaptability.

Building Meaningful Connections

Becoming a trustee also opens the door to a network of like-minded individuals dedicated to making a positive impact. Collaborating with fellow trustees, volunteers, and professionals in the sector allows you to exchange ideas, learn from diverse perspectives, and build relationships that can extend beyond the boardroom. These connections can be invaluable not only for the organisations you serve but also for personal and professional growth.

How to Get Involved

If the idea of becoming a trustee resonates with you, there are various steps you can take to get involved. Start by identifying causes that align with your values and passions. Research local non-profits, charitable foundations, or educational institutions that share your vision for positive change. Reach out to existing trustees or board members to express your interest and inquire about potential opportunities.

Consider attending workshops, conferences, or networking events within the philanthropic sector to gain insights and make connections. Additionally, do not underestimate the power of volunteering or contributing your expertise to a cause you are passionate about. Demonstrating your commitment and dedication can open doors to trustee roles.
