Roehampton students shortlisted for nationwide marketing competition

Two students from Roehampton University have reached the final of an international competition to find the best young marketing talent.

Lia Martinez Fernandez and Michela Spotti of Team ‘Brainstormers’ are among 9 student teams shortlisted for the final round of The Chartered Institute of Marketing’s (CIM) prestigious student competition, The Pitch.

The shortlist will be narrowed down to three teams and the winning team will be announced at a virtual live final on Friday, 17 March 2023. The overall winning student team will be named CIM’s ‘Marketers of the Future’. They will also receive a one-year complimentary CIM membership and a £1,500 cash prize to be shared amongst the team.

Now in its twelfth year, The Pitch sees students from UK and international universities compete to respond to a live client brief. The competition is sponsored this year by the sustainable social platform, WeAre8. The teams were challenged to formulate a marketing strategy by utilising a range of channels, advocates and partners to grow the user base of the platform, known as 8Citizens.

Discussing the competition Laura Chase, chief commercial officer at WeAre8 said: “It’s been brilliant to receive entries from teams across the UK and around the world, and to see that enthusiasm has not wavered among young marketers who are keen to put their marketing skills to the test. We’re grateful to everyone who submitted and look forward to seeing the students present their ideas in the final.”

Andrea Snagg, Chair of the CIM Greater London Board, said: “Young people across Greater London have not had it easy in the last few years, with those making the first steps in their careers particularly vulnerable to shifts in the market. It’s inspiring to see the breadth of talent that is out there, and the future of marketing looks bright. The Pitch competition is no easy ride and the students will need to draw upon their marketing knowledge and presentation skills in ways they may not have had to before. I’m looking forward to hearing the result of the final and I am sending my best wishes to Lia and Michela from Roehampton University on behalf of the CIM London Committee.”
